Why Mom Was Right About Living by the Sea
My mom grew up in a Greek Island before she moved to the city. She, like everyone else who has lived near the water, claims that if you ever live by the sea, SHE (the sea) will become your greatest love. The one you can never overcome and the one you never want to overcome.
Only when I lived in Thassos island, I came to truly understand this. And I would now like to go deeper into the reasons why my mom’s theory is actually true.
There is some substantial research that backs up the claim that we have a natural connection to the water and that living near the sea makes us happier and healthier, therefore we want to be near it. Here’s five insane (but true) things about living by the sea, that prove that my mom was right:
1. We are happier near the sea.
We have a “blue mind”. It’s simply a natural connection that humans and water have that promotes happiness. This statement is richly backed up by Wallace J. Nichols, a marine biologist and the author of the best selling book “Blue Mind: The surprising science that shows how being near, in, on, or under water can make you happier, healthier, more connected, and better at what you do”.
Wallace in his book focuses on the proven scientific evidence that being close to bodies of water promotes mental health and happiness. More specifically when we connect with the water by being in, on or under it, we come in a mildly meditative relaxed state, the so-called “Blue Mind”. In this state our brain adjusts in working in lower rhythms and relaxes from overstimulation.
2. We are healthier near the sea.
In the 19th century doctors used to prescribe long beach stays as a cure to many illnesses and they continue to do it nowadays. We now know that stress is linked to many diseases and can have a very negative impact on our overall health, so the calmness we get when near the sea is in many cases quite healing.
It is therefore a fact that being close to the sea improves our health. This happens for many other reasons than being stress free, some of which are the antibacterial and other beneficial properties of salt, the fresh air we breathe, the valuable Vitamins and minerals we get from salty water and the sun, like magnesium and Vitamin D, the better sleep we get after a long period at the beach, and all in all a better health through a lower heart and breathing rate, and safe, better workouts.
3. We are prettier near the sea
The sun in sensible doses and all the Vitamin D we are soaking up at the beach give us a better skin and also that sexy bronze color. At the same time, the salt of the seawater has antibacterial properties that improve the quality of our skin and heal any infections, like acne, even internal.
Moreover, we are provenly more likely to exercise when we are at the beach; we swim, we take long walks, we play on the sand etc. And this needs no explanation how can make us prettier.
Overall, a few days near the sea make us look prettier and we’ve all seen this happening. Imagine the beauty glow that living by the sea throughout the whole of the year could give you.
4. We are free near the sea
When we live by the beach we feel free for many reasons. For me the most important ones is that my wardrobe needs nothing more than light cotton clothes and flip flops – and that can count for as much as 80% of the contents of my closet.
At the same time, just sitting by the sea and observing it is a very well justified activity. If that isn’t “being free”, then what is?
5. We are made of water
Water is extremely important to our bodies. At least 60% of the adult body is comprised of water and on average humans can only survive about 4 days without any water.
It is hence understood that we are naturally drawn to the water and just being near it makes us feeling calmer and safer.
Live by the sea and you will never want to live anywhere else!
I’ve come to personally experience that my mom is right when saying that the sea will be your greatest love, if you ever happen to live near her. But there is also research that substantiates this theory.
My suggestion is: go try it. Apart from the scientific research that talks about the reasons why we are healthier and happier when we spend time at the beach, only by experience you can understand how the solution to any problem can be found when staring at the sea, how the food tastes better there, how you feel more connected to the earth and the people around you, how you will finally love exercising and how your every day will feel meaningful, even if you practically (or in city terms) did nothing at all!
